Most people blame the internet provider when the WiFi connection fails, but often the problem lies in the configuration of your router. WiFi networks work on specific channels, and when many nearby routers use the same channel, a frequency collision occurs that degrades the speed and stability of the connection.

The 2.4 GHz band, more common in older routers, has only 3 non-overlapping channels (1, 6 and 11 in Brazil). When your neighbors also use these channels, the signal becomes congested, causing latency, connection drop and slow speeds. Testing alternative channels is a simple solution that solves up to 70% of cases of unstable connection.

How to Identify Which Channel Your Router Is Using

The first step is to find out which channel your router currently operates on. Most routers come configured on channel 6 by default, just the most congested in residential areas.

Access the router administration panel by typing 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in the browser address bar. Log in with the default credentials (usually admin/admin, but see the router label). Search for the tab Wireless or WiFi Settings and note the current channel. If the router uses 5 GHz band, also check this setting separately, as it has more channels available (36 to 165).
